Steve Verbit

Steve Verbit
Associate
Head Coach -
Princeton University

Steve Verbit is Associate Head Coach and Defensive Line Coach at Princeton University and coached his 27th season at Princeton in 2011. Verbit also served as Defensive Coordinator for the Tigers, from 1993-2009.

Verbit has helped develop some of Princeton's best defensive players, with 10 different players earning 15 first-team All-Ivy honors, over a seven-year stretch.

Verbit helped develop a dominant defense during Princeton's 2006 championship season, despite significant losses in both the linebacking and secondary positions. That year, Princeton finished first in the Ivy League in both first downs allowed and third down conversions, with teams converting less than 28% of their third down opportunities. That year, Princeton was also ranked second in the Ivy League in rushing, passing and scoring defense and placed four players on the All-Ivy team.

Through the years, Verbit has helped engineer a change to a 3-4 defense to better utilize the depth of linebackers on the roster and also developed a rotation of defensive linemen.

Prior to coming to Princeton, Verbit coached at the University of Delaware for six seasons. He helped guide the Blue Hens to the Division II national championship in 1979. Verbit is a Delaware graduate, having received his
bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1977, and his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Delaware in 1980. Verbit also is the director of the Tiger Football Camps in the Princeton area.
